Art (Mary), Paul (Millie), Merino (Bernadine, aka Bunny), and Anna (Harry Wiker) continued truck farming, shipping into Chicago, first to Randolf St. Market, then South Water Market. The small market at the farm served them well through the years and 9 girls and 2 boys of the 3rd generation helped work the farm and market.
Bill, the oldest, enlisted in the service in the 40's and served in the Air Force as a lifetime career.

Art and Mary purchased the farm down the road in the late 40's (across from the Lutheran Church) and built greenhouses, extra land for rotation of the vegetable crops, and a small gladiola crop (which Mary did NOT love.) Mary and Art worked both places all their lives and Art also worked the RB&W. From the beautiful flowers in the greenhouse, to delicious produce, to fall harvest and Christmas trees and grave blankets.

Mary and Art had 4 children, Shirley, Frank, Paulette, and Jodi.  Frank grew up in the fields with his grandfather and father, learning the ways of the greenhouse and farm.

After graduating college, Frank returned to the family farm with a Horticulture degree. He taught 13 years at the Whiteside Area Vocational Center and along with Connie, worked the family greenhouse, farm and began the small market trailer at the Northland Mall in 1979. For 25 years they operated the local pick-your-own strawberry patch.

4th Generation

Frank and Connie have 2 children, Matt and Katy. They both grew up fully immersed in the daily aspects of living on the farm.

Matt started working in the strawberry patch as early as he could remember. Selling quarts of strawberries, he learned the art of customer service. When he was 9 he began working with Connie daily at the sweet corn stand at the mall, and continued in-between baseball games until he was old enough to work in the fields.

After graduating from Illinois State University with a Business Administration degree, he entered the corporate world with Sherwinn-Williams. Matt served them in many aspects over 10 years, managing, opening a new store in Naperville and on to regional work.

In 2008 Matt returned to help Frank and Connie. He now manages the greenhouse and farm side by side with his father.

Katy also started working at a very young age along side her mom, until she was old enough to run the stand at the mall with her friends. She went on to the Univeristy of Illinois to study Horticulture in her father's footsteps. After graduating, Katy returned to Selmi's and began her own business in Floral arranging and event planning, Selmi's Bridal. She is married to Kurt Downs and they have 4 children, Tate, Andrew, MaryKay and Auggie. She is also a Country Financial agent and will soon be opening her new office for both businesses in a vintage building in downtown Rock Falls.

Along the way, you may have seen many of the cousins helping during the summers. They grew up learning the Selmi traditions, customer service and have fun at "Camp Selmi" along the way.

5th Generation

The 5th generation are all loving the opportunity to grow up on the Selmi farm. They have been seen on the advertising of our flowers, sweet corn and pumpkin seasons since they were born. They love it when "papa"gives them rides on the "Gator". It won't be long until you are waited on by one of the 6 Downs or Selmi kiddos!
